About Letterhead

Letterhead is a review of language, the image, and the mind. Each piece sets one rare or obsolete thing beside one thoroughly ordinary one — a memory palace and a grocery list, a phrenological chart and a desk — and reports, without winking, on what happens when the two are made to share a room.

The method is old and unglamorous: read something genuinely strange, take it entirely seriously, apply it to a Tuesday. What survives that treatment is usually more interesting than the joke that got us there.

The magazine is written and illustrated by two editors — one working in art, language and image, the other a psychologist by training who prefers plain talk to jargon. It appears monthly, and occasionally sooner when a plate insists.
